So You Think You Can Dance Winner 2017

During the season xiv finale of "And so Yous Think You Can Dance," in September, other contestants on the Play tricks prime-time trip the light fantastic toe contest smiled large, gushed most their experience and shed some tears.

The performer who would ultimately win the title of "America's Favorite Dancer" was calm and matter-of-fact.

"I'k a really, actually wearisome and dry man being," he said.

Despite the self-critique, Lex Ishimoto, 19, of Irvine consistently wowed the "And then Yous Recall You lot Can Dance" judges and the TV audience. His impressive technique, high-flying acrobatics and inventive choreography showed it tin accept more than personality to win.

An early favorite, Ishimoto was never in danger of being eliminated, not once ranked among the lesser three contestants. He proved Nigel Lythgoe correct when the executive producer and judge told Ishimoto during auditions, "You, sir, are going to be a star."

Once Ishimoto was officially named the winner of "So You lot Recall Yous Can Dance," Lythgoe reiterated his earlier assessment. "I've got to concord my manus upwards and say Lex is one of the best dancers I've e'er seen, e'er," Lythgoe said.

"I've never seen anyone exercise triple tours and things like this. And I'one thousand talking about Baryshnikov, Nureyev, and these incredible dancers."

Drawn to the spotlight

Even without "So Y'all Think You Can Dance," Ishimoto seemed destined for dance greatness. The Orange County native's résumé shows he is no stranger to the spotlight. And zero about him says "boring."

Ishimoto started dance at age seven, studying hip-hop and ballet at West Coast School of the Arts in Costa Mesa. By age 12, he was dancing the championship role in a touring production of the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit "Billy Elliot: The Musical."

In the years that followed, Ishimoto competed in the Youth America G Prix finals in New York, the world's premier educatee ballet competition, and was a chiliad finalist in the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards for not-classical dance.

"The stage is my second habitation," Ishimoto said in an episode of "Dance School Diaries," a YouTube series he appeared on when he was 16.  "All the optics are on y'all. And one time the music starts, you're in another world."

A former student at Orangish County School of the Arts, Ishimoto trained with the Boston Ballet's second company, BBII, for the 2016-2017 flavour earlier moving back to Los Angeles to pursue a commercial dance career.

Just before joining the "And then You Retrieve You Can Dance" cast, Ishimoto performed professionally in Travis Wall'due south Shaping Audio visitor.

One bold slogan

Now that the "So You Think You Can Dance" tour is complete, Ishimoto will re-join Shaping Audio for the winter 2022 bout of its "Behind the Pall" product.

From hip-hop dancer, to Broadway performer, to competing in an international ballet competition and then dancing in a music video with recording artist Sia, information technology seems Ishimoto is up for annihilation.

"I want to practise it all. I've never seen a dancer do it all," says Ishimoto who was billed every bit contemporary dancer on "So You lot Retrieve You lot Can Trip the light fantastic toe" despite his experience in many dance styles. "I recollect of this prove as a stepping stone; a new bridge."

With a $250,000 prize in his pocket, a supportive social audience of 134,000 Instagram followers and a custom merchandise line, Ishimoto is well on his way to his ambitious goal.

He even has his ain personal slogan, "Stay Legendary." He says it motivates everything he does.

The "Stay Legendary" phrase, which is included on all of Ishimoto's merchandise (stickers, shirts, hoodies, etc.), comes from his ambition to brand an impact on the globe. He said it was partly inspired by the "epic scenes and characters" in comic books and anime.

"If you don't exit something in the world, your fourth dimension doesn't hateful anything," he says.

"It'southward a style of life for me."

Ishimoto, whose win marks the beginning fourth dimension a Japanese American has been crowned champion of the "And so Yous Think You lot Can Dance" competition, said he is honored to exist in a position where people look up to him — especially aspiring male dancers.

"I feel like I wasn't built-in to exist a dancer," he says. "It took a lot of hard work and a certain attitude and I feel like it's telling other people that it is possible. It sounds really corny, just never give upward, yous know? Stay Legendary."
